Hold your Breath…

Hold Your Breath (Search and Rescue, #1)Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Today’s new release is an action-packed and suspense-filled mystery and romance that finds Lou Sparks as the newest diver in a remote Rocky Mountain town’s search and rescue operation. Lou moved across the country, far from her controlling family and an annoying ex and is planning to immerse herself in her new job. While she’s training hard and trying to fit in with the team, it seems that every time she slips up, it’s in front of her handsome but stoic boss, Callum Cook, who hardly ever smiles and certainly not at her.  We first met Lou and Callum in the introductory novella to this series, On His Watch.  You can find my review here.

But then Lou discovers a corpse during a diving exercise and is anxious to help local authorities solve the riddle of his identity. Staid Callum, with his cautious personality and OCD tendencies, reluctantly agrees to help, if only to keep Lou out of trouble. When it soon becomes apparent that Lou is being stalked and the stalking incidents escalate, Callum is forced to admit his attraction to his new recruit and his need to be the one to see that she is safe.

The cat and mouse game continues and Lou, Callum and local authorities try to figure out who would want to harm her and how it’s connected to the murder she uncovered. It’s a fast-paced, suspenseful read with some twists and turns along the way.

I received this book as an advanced copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Silent Sentry…

Silent SentrySilent Sentry by Theresa Rizzo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This new suspenseful crime novel by Theresa Rizzo was just released and I found it a definite winner! The theme of “family takes care of family” is prevalent throughout this story that focuses on a developing relationship between Dr. Joe Scarfili and Gianna Donnatelli, whose large and wealthy Italian families have been best friends for years. But Joe is seven years older than Gianna and had been married while Gianna had a huge crush on him when she was still an awkward student.

They meet up again under less than ideal circumstances, after Gianna, a nurse and computer whiz who is housesitting at her father’s home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, surprises an intruder who attacks and injures her before leaving without a trace. Joe hasn’t seen Gianna in years and doesn’t even recognize her as she’s being wheeled through the ER, until he hears her name and stops in to check on her. In order to be released from the hospital, she needs to be checked on during the night and has no one who could stay with her so Joe offers his guest room.

As they get to know one another again, Joe finds out that Gianna has developed cutting edge medical computer programming that her company will be taking public soon and, if used in hospitals worldwide, could be worth billions of dollars.  And Gianna learns that Joe’s former wife was gunned down in front of their home in an apparent gang-related shooting, an event that makes him leery of giving his heart again and of Gianna’s home and charitable work in the poorest of Detroit’s neighborhoods.

There are lots of twists and turns and intriguing questions involving attacks and a car bomb that seem to be directed at Gianna, but could be meant for Joe or even Gianna’s father, who has been in Italy on business and visiting her brother, Paul. And as Joe and Gianna become closer, they try to figure out who might be involved in this complex mystery of possible corporate espionage, including the Italian Mafia, the Russian Mob or even some of their own family members. And trust me, I don’t think you’ll guess the ending, which opens up another slew of ethical questions…

This is the third book of Ms. Rizzo’s that I’ve read and it’s as intriguing and well done as her others. I received an advance copy from Theresa Rizzo in exchange for an honest review.

Dear Readers,

I wrote Race the Darkness from start to finish three different times, with three different story lines, and with three different titles! The only thing that ever remained the same between the versions was Xander and Isleen. I believed in them and the story they wanted to tell. I hope you love reading about their tragedies and triumphs as much as I enjoyed writing them… All three times! And isn’t the cover amazing, beautiful, gorgeous? I cried the first time I saw it! It made all the hard work to get this book to you worth it!

P.S. I would love to connect with you and hear what you think about the cover! You can find me here:

An excerpt from Race the Darkness

No fucking way was he going to die running. He stopped, turned and faced the truck barreling toward them. The tires ate up the ground at an indecent rate. He clutched Isleen tighter to his chest. For her sake, he wanted it to be a quick death. No more lingering. No more pain.

That thought infuriated him. None of this was right. They shouldn’t be on the verge of death. Again.

The truck kept coming—twenty-five feet.

Everything slowed, happened as if through the quicksand of time. A white dandelion floaty meandered on the breeze directly between them and the truck. His heart no longer ran a staccato rhythm. Duh…duhm. Pause. Duh…duhm.

Pause.

His life didn’t flash before his eyes. The future did. Isleen’s future. In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes void of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy. She smiled, an expression so full of warmth and tenderness and undiluted joy that it plunked itself down inside his heart and wouldn’t leave.

He ached to create that kind of smile on her face, but their lives were over and it all could’ve gone so differently if he’d only listened to her, believed in her, found her years before now.

Taking Fire…

Taking Fire (One-Eyed Jacks, #4)Taking Fire by Cindy Gerard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of my favorite authors, Cindy Gerard, is a master of the sexy, action-packed alpha male novel and she proves it again with her new book, releasing today! Former special ops turned government contractor, Bobby Taggart meets a beautiful Israeli while on assignment in Kabul. He knows she’s working hard to get his attention but he can’t figure out what her end game is. And soon it doesn’t matter as he finds himself falling hard for the sexiest woman he’s ever met.

But when Talia Levine uses him to lead her elite organization to find and kill a man that the Americans wanted alive for questioning, Bobby can’t believe he’s been played. And when he gets back to the hotel room where they’d had some extremely hot nights, there’s no trace of her.

Fast forward six years to when Talia and Bobby meet up by chance right before the embassy in Oman that they’re in is bombed. Forced together to help each other escape, Bobby soon finds that Talia’s young son was kidnapped and the bombing was targeting her in retaliation for the assassination her organization committed six years earlier. She is nearly hysterical when her son’s bodyguard is found murdered and she knows who’s taken her son. Bobby is still furious with her for what happened years ago when she put a tracker in his phone, but he sympathizes with her fear for her son — a son that is just about the right age to be his…

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
