Jackson’s Trust…

Jackson's Trust (Fourth Down, #1)Jackson’s Trust by Violet Duke

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

I haven’t done a romance review in awhile and I’m glad I had this one to read and review right now, because I really liked this fun and sexy book that’s the first in a new sports series by Violet Duke.  I would have given the book five stars but I felt the beginning was a little slow moving and the ending brought in some unusual events that didn’t seem to mesh with the rest of the story.

That said, all the chapters in between are fabulous fun in a story of brilliant network sports analyst Jackson Gray being asked to mentor newly hired sideline reporter Leila Hart in this football oriented story.  Jackson immediately senses that Leila is hiding a keen understanding of the game and he can’t imagine why.

The two begin a very flirtatious and fun working relationship, both vowing they won’t allow their attraction to turn into anything more. And Jackson admits he has some deep, dark secrets, as well, which we find out about late in the story.  Sports and romance, what could be better?

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.

I'll Be There (The Montgomery Brothers, #6)

My Review of I’ll Be There by Samantha Chase

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Zach Montgomery is part of the wealthy and powerful Montgomery family and he’s used to doing what he wants and living life however he sees fit. He has a high-powered job within the family business and is a risk taker in his personal life, too. And when he suffers a life threatening climbing injury, his newfound vulnerability makes him even more difficult.

His longtime assistant, Gabriella Martine, is used to difficult men and she’s always been able to stick up for herself just fine. She always thought Zach gorgeous and charming but has always been careful to be professional around him. She’s sure he doesn’t feel the same attraction for her the way she does for him.

When Zach becomes more and more frustrated and dependent on others, his Uncle William, always the charming and meddling matchmaker, asks Gabriella to go to Zach’s apartment to work with him until he’s ready to come back to the office, to see if she can get through to him where no one else can. And she tries, she really does, but Zach is determined to be as difficult a jerk as possible. He’s fired numerous therapists and after several days, Gabriella is close to her breaking point with him. Frankly, I found it a little tough to believe he’d turn himself around, too, but I guess you never know with guys, right?

So finally, the new physical therapist is working out, Zach is making progress in getting around and he begins to see Gabrielle in a new light. The attraction he’s always felt for her, that he would never before admit, also comes to light and Gabriella is soon thrilled to take their relationship to a more intimate level.

Zach has a long way to go in becoming the kind of man who Gabriella could spend her life with and he’s not even sure he can change that much. He tries, but can he get it right? As I said, I guess you just never know with guys, hmm?

This is number six in the Montgomery Brothers series and it’s hot and sexy and frankly, I was glad Gabrielle was a strong woman, because as cute and take charge as Zach was, he needed to be put in his place if there was going to be a wonderful HEA!

I’ll Be There Spotlight Tour…

A quick note from author Samantha Chase:

Hey, everyone!  It’s Samantha Chase and I am psyched to be here with you today.  This month I am totally celebrating the release of “I’ll Be There” – book six in the Montgomery Brothers series.   I fell in love with this family from the very beginning – and I think some of you have too!  But there has been something special about Zach and Gabriella’s story that is different than any of our other Montgomerys.

From the time “Meant for You” came out (book five), readers instantly began asking about Zach and Gabriella.  We were introduced to them in that book and you really got a sense that there was a story brewing there.  They were snarky and argumentative with one another in a way that you just knew was masking some deep feelings.  And by the end of the book we had the makings of a wounded hero and an under-appreciated heroine.  The best part is that no matter how angry Zach made us, we still believe there’s room for redemption.

And as for Gabriella, I think readers are waiting for her to put her boss in his place!  We want her to stand up for herself and maybe make Zach suffer a little in the process.  Who doesn’t love a heroine who finally realizes her self-worth and makes the hero come begging?  I know I love that!

I think this story – more than any other I’ve written – deals with the complexity of a relationship between two broken people.  It’s more than a personality clash and both Zach and Gabriella have healing to do – both together and apart.

Here’s an excerpt:

It was now or never.

Shifting again so he had his arms resting on the table, he looked at Gabriella and studied her face. “The truth?” he asked and waited until she nodded. “Okay, Gabs. But remember, you asked. I invited you here tonight because I needed you to realize how sorry I was for the way I’ve treated you. I’ve done some serious soul searching these last few days and I don’t like the man I’ve become. I’m committed to my therapy with Alex and I’m committed to getting back to being the head of Montgomerys. I didn’t want you to come in here on the defensive. I wanted us to just have some time to talk and…get to know each other again.”

She leaned back in her chair and let out a shaky breath. “Wow. Okay.”

That was it? That was all she had to say? “But more than that, Gabriella, I don’t want to do any of it without you. I need you. You are the reason I’ve been able to accomplish all I have with the company. You’re the reason I’ve been successful in just about every aspect of my life for the last five years.” Reaching across the table, Zach took one of Gabriella’s hands in his and just marveled at how soft it was. He always wondered what her skin felt like and now that he knew, he wanted to feel more. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

Her blue eyes filled with tears and she used her free hand to quickly wipe them away before they fell and then studied their hands on the table. “Zach,” she said softly, “we’ve been over this.”

“I know, I know,” he replied just as softly. “I need another chance, Gabriella. I need a chance to make things right.” He looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “I need you.”

Deciding to be bold, he turned her hand over and twined their fingers together and gently squeezed. He was surprised she didn’t pull away and thought maybe—just maybe—they were making progress. “I know I can’t erase the things I’ve said and done, but if you’ll give me one more chance, Gabs, I promise not to screw up. If I do anything to upset you, you can walk away. Hell, you can slap me in the face, kick me in the shin or throw something heavy at me and I’ll take it. I just…I can’t do this without you.”

Her eyes never left their joined hands.

“I don’t want to do this without you,” he said quietly.

“I’m afraid to…believe you.” He barely heard her words, they were uttered so softly.

Everything inside of him clenched with pain. His always confident, ever-efficient assistant was now distrusting and uncertain—because of him. “I don’t know what to say to make you believe me. Tell me. Tell me what I need to do. Anything. Anything you need from me to gain your confidence, and I’ll do it.”

She looked up at him. “It’s not that easy. Every day I walked into the office, I gave you another chance. Every time you berated me or made me feel like I screwed up and I came back, I gave you another chance. From my standpoint, you’ve had two years’ worth of second chances. I think I’ve been more than generous.”

His other hand reached out to cup her hand in both of his. “I know you have and you have no idea how much I appreciated it.” She looked at him with disbelief. “It’s true! I know I never said it but every morning you were there, I was thankful. Every time you walked into my office, I was thankful. Please. I’m begging here, Gabs.”

Three Nights Before Christmas…

Three Nights before Christmas (Montana Born Christmas)Three Nights before Christmas by Kat Latham

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was kind of a difficult review for me,  because I absolutely loved this book and I want to make sure I explain exactly why.  It is set in Montana right before Christmas, but it’s about so much more than just the holidays. It felt like a very realistic and gritty story about someone who had just served three years in prison for a crime she swears she was innocent of but who toughed it out and now just wants to get on with her life.  In some ways she’s now much stronger, but she’s also pretty jaded, knowing she can’t ever go back to the totally trusting and fun girl she was before.

Lacey Gallagher was a freight train engineer who loved her job but when she finally comes home to help at her family’s Christmas tree business, she doesn’t even have a driver’s license. She just wants to keep her head down and help her brother by cutting and hauling trees on their property while their parents are out of town over the holiday.

But living in a small town means facing people from her past, including the forest ranger, Austin Wilder, who was instrumental in having her put in prison for a drug related scheme that her boyfriend at the time swore she orchestrated and carried out, using the train to make deliveries.

When they first meet again, straight-laced Austin and Lacey are horribly uncomfortable with each other and he’s not very accepting of her having done her time and getting on with her life. At first, he doesn’t even realize that every time he shows up in uniform in the part of the forest where she’s working, it totally freaks her out and also means she has to report to her parole officer that she’s had an encounter with law enforcement, even if it’s not in an official capacity.

Eventually, Austin needs Lacey’s help in repairing an old steam train to be the main attraction at the Christmas Wonderland  for which he’s responsible. And when he explains his reasons for needing her help, he can’t believe how little she wants in compensation and how willing she is to help him.

Over time, the two begin to see that maybe they were both wrong in their opinions of the other and both made some bad decisions in the past.  An almost purely physical relationship develops between them at first, an extremely steamy physical relationship, that satisfies both of their needs. But soon Austin starts to wonder if there could be a more permanent relationship between them in the future and he begins to question his past judgment where Lacey’s case was concerned.

The story feels so real and the characters so well developed that I found the events so believeable, even though at first the story seemed like it would be implausible.  Like I said, it’s not your typical feel-good, light-hearted Christmas read, it’s so much more. It’s poignant and funny and sexy and well worth your time.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.

Shock.
Then more shock.
And then…aah…Gabriella melted into Zach. After all they had been through together, after everything they had talked about tonight, this was so not the way she envisioned their time together ending.
But she was completely on board with it.
For years she had dreamed about what it would be like for Zach Montgomery to kiss her and now that he was, she needed to stop talking to herself and start enjoying it!
Zach must have realized she was on board because his second crutch fell to the floor as his arms banded around her waist. Everything inside Gabriella melted at the heated contact. He was hard where she was soft and they just…fit. Her hands tentatively stroked their way up his muscular arms and then paused on his shoulders. It felt…naughty…to be touching her boss like this.
Wait…not her boss. Zach. She was touching Zach. Get your head out of the office, girl!
A low hum emanated from Zach and she let her hands slowly glide up the strong column of his throat—and stopped and lingered on his now clean-shaven jaw—and up into his hair. It was longer than he’d ever worn it but it was thick and silky and her fingers just sort of gently grasped and tugged to hold him to her.
If possible, Zach moved in even closer and Gabriella was thoroughly pressed from head to toe between him and the wall. His lips were devouring her but his arms stayed as they were—tightly banded and holding her close as if he was afraid she’d get away.
Not likely.
Right now, there wasn’t another place on the planet she wanted to be. Which was a bit ironic considering that less than a minute ago she wanted to be anyplace but here! Funny how fast things could change.
She struggled between needing to take a breath and never letting Zach’s lips leave hers again. As if reading her mind, he began to trail kisses along her cheek and her jaw. He nipped at her earlobe and then stopped to simply inhale her.
“Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to do this?” he growled lowly against her ear.
“Hopefully as long as I’ve wanted you to,” she openly admitted as she rubbed herself against him.
He chuckled softly. “The first time you walked through my door, I wanted to touch you. Kiss you.” His tongue lightly traveled down the side of her neck to her collarbone. “Make love to you.”
Gabriella trembled at his words. How was it possible she didn’t notice that? How had he kept it a secret for so long? And why? It was on the tip of her tongue to ask him, but he raised his head and gave her a very sexy grin before reclaiming her lips. There was no shock this time, just anticipation. Zach’s admission had
pretty much done it all for her, she was putty in his hands.
She wanted to move, to get to a place where her back wasn’t pressed against a wall.  But again, she didn’t want to stop what Zach was doing long enough to even say anything. Her nails raked his scalp and she felt the growl vibrate through him. She pushed her breasts more firmly against him, and felt his erection nudge her belly.
The wall was just fine.
