I met a wonderfully open and lovely woman named Marianne on the whale watching cruise. She and her husband were in Maui for their 15th wedding anniversary. She was wearing a scarf and I presumed she’d had breast cancer like me and after awhile I just had to strike up a conversation as I was sweating under my wig and a hat and wishing I’d just gone the scarf route. It turns out she has alopecia and refuses to wear a wig, instead wearing scarves or going “topless” as she calls it 😉
She is a nurse from Ohio and has gotten very comfortable with her condition. She has lovely tattooed eyebrows and even though her head remains bald, her eyelashes apparently come and go, growing in for a couple of years, then falling out again. We had a great time talking about cultural differences and women’s feelings about their appearances. Hi, Marianne! Thanks for spending time with me…

Oh, no, are you okay? They did tell me to be careful about sunscreen after chemo and I always am in Hawaii…

Aside from a scar on my check (that is healing quite well) I was very fortunate. It was small and contained and didn’t spread. Now, I’m an advocate for sunscreen. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

My friend Donna refused to wear a wig. She had a terminal breast cancer diagnosis about 15 years ago. She has been cancer free for many years and travels a lot. Sending love to you~

myself suffers from alopecia, i lost all my hair and still now, im lucky to grow my eyebrowns and eyelashes back. i know how she felt i was only 18 when i lost my hair i believe its your body attack the hair follicles itself can be triggered by stress or shock.

Thank you for sharing that. I didn’t know that eyelashes/eyebrows would grow back and not the hair on your head. I’m hoping mine is temporary from chemo. Lost my bottom lashes but not the top!

Yea my eye lashes and eyebrowns grew back but my hair is patchy. I remember the time when my eyelashes grew back was a long process tho. I wish you all the best on your chemo.
