Monday Musings about Maui…

header-whales

We just booked a short whale watching excursion for next weekend when we are in Maui and I’m so excited.  I hope to have some of my own pictures to post later and lots of stories, but I do know that humpback whales travel in the fall from the Pacific Northwest south to Maui to give birth in the relatively warmer and predatory-free waters.  This should be prime whale watching time.

I was told that since the adults are roughly the size of a school bus(!) you can see them easily from shore, but if you want to see the babies and interaction between whales, it’s really necessary to go out on a boat.  My stepdaughter and her hubby and some friends of theirs whose trip overlaps a little with ours had booked an excursion and invited us along, so we will be on the Ocean Discovery vessel that the Pacific Whale Foundation sends out a couple times a day to allow tourists like us to see and listen to the whales closer up.  Can’t wait!

  4. While you are on Maui, take the trip up Haleakala, the volcano on the island. The crater is 10,000 up — winds send the clouds scurrying over the crater so that the picture you take one moment looks nothing like the picture you take the next moment. Beautiful. Stop at the visitor center about 1/2 way up and see the Silversword plant that only grows on the volcano. As you can see, I highly recommend it! Enjoy the whales, then enjoy the volcano. Maui is a great place to get in touch with the Creator.

  15. Ooh… have a great time! I really enjoyed whale watching… which is kind of odd since I’m afraid of sea creatures. (And things that fly… but that’s another story…) Of course, my whale experience was off the East Coast… 🙂

      2. Never say never. The first time I went to Hawaii was for my 20th anniversary and a few years later we were able to buy the timeshare and now I’ve gone 7 or 8 times. I can’t believe it myself sometimes…

      3. That would be so nice, thank you, Dee. I’ll be there at … oh, wait – I have a dentists appointment – so sorry. 😦

      4. That’ll be the day I give up seeing a whale for a trip to the dentist. I mean, how expensive could a last minute fare from London to Maui be? And you’d probably only be traveling like 2 or 3 days.

      8. I worked hard to get good deals on this trip to Maui. Had to plan several months out and wait for sale fares. But we ladies who lunch have the time 😉

I’ll catch your answer in the morning – time for bed now. Goodnight. 🙂
