TMI Thursday, a Ton of Bricks…

bricks-1345327_1920

I might have been too quick to say how good I was feeling on Saturday, yep, just a little too cocky.   Sunday brought some side effects hit me like a ton of bricks.

Nausea, not too bad, took a pill for that a couple of times. Aches, pains, changes in your  digestion; suffice it to say, nothing good…

The worst came from an injection of Neulasta I had on Saturday. The process is cool, I’ve seen commercials in the States for it. After chemo, the nurse attaches a tiny plastic container to the back of your upper arm. You feel a little twinge as a needle-like catheter goes in. Exactly 27 hours later it dispenses medication which ramps up the production of white blood cells in your bone marrow to fight infections.

I can’t quite describe what that feels like, but within a day I had such severe pain in my legs and back that I had to go back on prescription pain medication for three days.  There’s enough anecdotal advice to recommend taking Claritin, but maybe I didn’t take it soon enough.  I’ll get another chance because they do this every time I get chemo.

Hoping to feel more like myself soon so I can try to write and comment again.  And I hate writing posts like this.  I really do appreciate your sympathy and good wishes, but I’d rather write upbeat things.  So in the future if I’m absent for awhile, just assume it’s some inconvenient cancer thing and I’ll be back soon.

On the plus side, I’m down about 12 pounds and I didn’t really feel well enough to care about the election returns…

  2. I have heard rumors that it makes your bones ache terribly. I was so thankful every time the blood work came back and they said my cell counts were high enough I didn’t need it. I can’t imagine having bone aches on a regular bases. Only 3 more. Only 3 more. Only 3 more. I always felt that my blog was my ‘safe space’ to write about what I was going through. It helps. Blog away lady… positive and negative. Glad the nausea is controlled. ❤ ❤

    1. I go tomorrow for a check up and I’m going to talk to them about if I need it for sure. It was horrid for me. I think the chemo is more manageable for me. My hair is looking kind of lifeless already! Got the book today, you are such a dear <3. I will definitely pay it forward. So many stories in that book it's truly amazing…

      1. A friend gave me a copy. I found it to be the best book I had read through all of this. It is just full of positive, real stories of real people. I am so glad it got there already. I would defiantly ask! It is hard to be your own advocate when you are so tired all the time. When my hair started falling out it actually hurt. Not everyone gets that painful scalp thing… It was about 2 weeks in. I am glad other than the Neulasta you are managing. ❤ keep me posted.

    1. Thank you, I just hate feeling sick. I just get annoyed with myself. Decided I’d try to do one thing every day rather than get upset over all the things I can’t do 🙂

      1. Perfect. One day at a time. Gain strength, and then add to the day. It’s not going to do you any good to get frustrated over it. Just let it be and worry about you. ❤

  6. I’m sorry it’s been rough. Question: do you access to pot? That’d do wonders for your pain and nausea as well as increase your appetite. Just sayin’. Hope you feel better soon, D. 😊

    1. I refuse to answer on the grounds that — but I have adult kid and stepkids, so I’m betting they could score me some. I remember trying it a few times in college and never felt it did anything for me. Oh, and not to worry about the weight loss, I can well afford it 😉

      1. Get some. It’ll give ya some relief from most of the symptoms you mentioned. If I were closer….well, anyway. Keep your nutrition up. 😊

Don’t mind the days that are less than upbeat it only means you’re human. We all have those days. It allows us to appreciate the good times even more and to not take them for granted.

    Have a great day! ☺ 🌷

  18. I’ve seen that commercial too, you are wearing one of those? First time around is the hardest as you don’t know what to expect. Hope you are able to square away all the medications to make you feel better. Even though it may depress you to write these posts, you are helping others who are going through the same, to feel normal. Wishing you a better Sunday and week ahead!! xoxo
