In Midwestern states when the air warms
Brings the threat of rain and thunderstorms
Wind and lightening, hail and rains
Keeps noses pressed to window panes
Always on alert in case funnel clouds form!

(Several Midwestern states are part of what’s referred to as “tornado alley” where tornadoes can occur often during early spring and summer when weather conditions are right. Last night we had such a night, but luckily no funnel clouds!)

Not my favorite thing and its easy to get complacent, but every so many years there’s a really bad tornado near us somewhere so you can’t take a chance…

We live in the northern Midwest now. We get VERY few tornados all the way up here but the first time the siren went off it was a wakeup call. Had no idea what to do. Being from NY no one had told us about this part of being in the Midwest.

Haha, first memory I have of one was visiting my grandparents in Nebraska when I was about 4 and going into the cellar in the middle of the night with everyone, where I promptly lost my big fake diamond ring my aunt had just given me and cried and cried about that 🙂

I think it must have been close but I don’t know if there was damage or not. Isn’t it sad, what I remember most is that fake ring,lol

When I was a kid, my dad was on the volunteer fire dept and he was a “spotter” so they would go park out in the country and watch for funnel clouds and tornadoes. Poor mom would be stuck with 4 screaming kids in a damp basement under our 100 year old house, waiting for the all clear!! 🙂

I never used to worry about tornadoes in my area… But two have happened in the last 5 or 6 years. I get really anxious when the meteorologists start talking about them. I can’t imagine living in your area! I’m not a lucky person. I’ve been to California twice in my life and during one of those trips, we experienced an earthquake. Best not to invite me over!

Glad you are safe and well! Last night was a doozy here in OK. Now it’s thundering and rumbling and hot so all the ingredients are there for some storm chasing!

Luckily I haven’t been in one, but nearby, so when the sirens go off, we go into the basement immediately. You really can’t take a chance!

Dangerous storms that have cause so much death and destrcution. Is there a perticular season for these tornadoes?

Yes, usually early spring through early summer. We had lots of tornado drills as kids, in the hallway at school. I could never live in a house w/o a basement 🙂

Wow. It shows us that the location of our childhood plays such a great part of our adult selves. Everything you’re talking about I have seen in movies like “The Wizard Of Oz.” It is all foreign to this city kid. Be happy. Be well.

Thank you! My mom was from Nebraska and I remember getting up in the middle of the night when we were kids and having to go outside and down in the cellar when we were visiting. Scary!

One of the reasons I didn’t mind leaving in Tornado Alley. I grew with earthquakes so they don’t scare me, but tornadoes sure do! ❤

I don’t like tornado drills in my big auto parts warehouse, Diane! We have them once in the Spring, once in the Fall. We go to the nearest bathroom. Last time we did this we had to stay for 20 minutes while everyone all over building signs the clipboard which hangs in all the bathrooms, walkie talkie check ins between bathrooms until nearly everyone is accounted for. Only good thing is they have air conditioning! Rest of building doesn’t. 😦
