Self-Kindness…

kindness-1197351_1920

I have been incredibly kind to myself this week.  I’ve been focusing on my own exercise program, two training sessions and two water exercise programs a week.  Had I been any kinder, I don’t think I’d be able to walk.  Just kidding, sort of…

I ‘ve been through a whole series of physical therapy sessions and then personal trainers since I hurt my right knee last fall, basically after running up and down the stairs too much in the wrong shoes before vacation.  At my age apparently even walking can be risky.

Since my knee is doing pretty well now, I decided I would ramp up my exercise program a little bit.  We have a very modern and fairly inexpensive park district facility about one and a half miles from my house and hubby and son, Dave, and I all signed up.

My new personal trainer is Pat, a tiny woman in adorable size two work out clothes who puts me through the paces twice a week.  She told me that my form is excellent and whoever worked with me before did a great job — that would have been Evil Personal Trainer Keith.  Pat is just as evil, I think, in her own sweet way.  I need to get to know her better to be sure.  She is very encouraging and makes me almost forget how hot and sweaty and tired I am!

Now I may have confused being kind to myself with being good to myself, but I really like to exercise and life had kind of gotten in the way of me doing that for awhile.  And I think many women, moms in particular, tend to put their needs last.

So right now, being kind to myself means I’m going to continue focusing on taking care of my own health and well-being by exercising for my physical health and writing for my mental health. And trying not to be too hard on myself about either one.

    1. It was a good focus for me. I think women in general are far too self-critical. I’m enjoying the challenge so far!

      1. And too used to putting other’s needs ahead of their own. You just start to forget about yourself. So glad that you were able to find time for you!

  4. I need kindness lessons… when it comes to me. No problem with everyone around me, but kind to myself is a challenge. I also need a personal trainer. There’s no way I can spend a penny on that right now what with the lack of income and all (plus I’m not sure I could find an inexpensive one around here)… and the kids will be out of school in about month so I won’t have nearly as much time to myself. Ahh, see? I’ll be doing my best to give them a fun, active, exciting summer. Not a lot of time to do much for me!

    1. It is so difficult when you’re a mom, I know and we always put our kids’ needs ahead of our own. It’s difficult not to. Maybe something active with the kids or if they’re at sports, sometimes I used to walk around the baseball fields while they had practice, etc. I sympathize, cause mine are adults and I do have more free time…

      1. My kids kind of hate sports. Probably because John and I also kind of hate them. They’d rather do some LEGO engineering. Great for their minds… lacking for their bodies. They are skinny little kids (especially my son… he’s a rail)… But still they need to run around!

      2. Hahaha, nothing wrong with Legos. Both hubby and older son are engineers and my son was incredibly good with Legos as a kid. Me, not so much!

      3. I am amazed at some of the stuff they build! Way more complex than anything I built as a kid, I think. But I did build my dream kitchen with LEGO not too long ago. It’s been dismantled since, but I think I actually have pics of it! Haha… I should post.

    1. Thanks, we all deserve it but I think many women feel guilty taking time for themselves. I will try to stop being so self-critical also, especially with my writing! You, too!xxoo

      1. Yes, yes, yes. We’re all hard on ourselves I have been brutalizing myself over the small bout with writer’s block this week. We have to stop doing that. (There are enough critics in this world).

  9. I got back into exercising about a month ago — used to be really good about it, but then I slacked off. Not only does it give me more energy, it seems to help me make better choices in other areas, like eating the right foods, wearing nicer clothes, etc. Definitely helps with my outlook!
So yes, absolutely it’s being kind to yourself!

  10. Moms tend to neglect their needs, especially exercise and physical training. Can’t agree more. We need to spend a little time for us…a little act of kindness for our own good… 🙂
