You Can’t Make This Stuff Up…

I’m linking up with my friend, Laura of Fountain Pen Follies today as she and I share some Chicago area news stories that make us both SO proud (eyes rolling).  Laura and I first met in Blogging 101 and discovered we’re from the same area, although she’s north of Chicago and I’m southwest of the city.  We’ve become good friends and even met for our first lunch a few weeks ago, something we’re already planning to repeat.

I’m sharing a story from the western suburbs of a 29 year-old woman who allegedly left a suburban bar and was driving home when she drove her car onto the railroad tracks, not across them, but along them, later telling police “she thought it was a street.”  We do have problems with potholes in the Chicago area, but that must have been some poorly maintained street she thought she was driving on!

This happened at 1:30 a.m. Friday morning.  A police officer in the area arrived on the scene after other drivers started honking to attract the officer’s attention.  The police department then contacted the railroad to shut down all train traffic on the line while the officer attempted to stop the woman’s vehicle, which eventually became lodged between the railroad ties and tracks.  The officer could “smell a strong odor of alcohol” and asked the woman to complete field sobriety tests, which she failed.  Gee, hard to believe, right?

I certainly don’t mean to make light of drinking and driving, but the stupidity of some people is amazing.  I mean, have we all not heard of calling a taxi, or Uber or a friend?   And is it really a good idea for a young woman to be leaving a bar by herself at 1:30 in the morning anyway?  Just sayin’…  Luckily in this case, no one was injured.
