because I’m an April baby, and that’s my birthstone angel that my mother and I made 16 years ago after my dad passed away. Mom had come back from Arizona to inter my father’s ashes at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery about 50 miles southwest of Chicago.
It’s a very impressive sight, a little like Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, with rows of granite headstones and plaques rather than white crosses. The cemetery was opened in recent years because of the growing need for burial space as WWII veterans reached their 80s and 90s.
When things had quieted down after the initial memorial service and gathering of family, I wasn’t sure how to keep my mother occupied as she grieved and tried to decide what she wanted to do next with her life.
So while she stayed with us, she and I assembled quite a few of these little angels made from different colored birthstone beads and golden pins to sell at craft shows. I’m not sure, but I think being surrounded by all those angels made getting through the next few weeks a little easier for us both.

Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know they made a new cemetery for the glorious WW11 veterans. I guess that means your dad served in the military?
I love that you and your mom made angels. Bet that helped you both so much.

I was 19 when my dad died, and I felt as though there was no future, just sadness. It had taken a while to get past the pain of the loss, but the regret of not knowing him as an adult will be one of my life’s biggest regrets.

Oh, that must have been very hard. We were very lucky to have both parents a long time. They both even got to know both of my boys.

This is a sad but wonderful story. I think when we lose someone, unexpected things help. When my dad died 4 years ago, I took a tie (yes a necktie) from my parents house. It made me feel like he was still around… until he retired, he wore one every (work)day. For grandma, it was a pillow and a very old glass measuring cup. Love your angel. 🙂

Thank you. He lived to be 82, mom was almost 9 years younger and lived to 86. And both my parents got to know all their grandchildren so we consider ourselves luckier than many families!

I didn’t link my post, I just put #atozchallenge in the title and tag so people could find it. I also have the badge on my site as a widget. Does that help?

I don’t think you have to have one…it’s easier for me to have a common thread, but mine is April birthdays, so not terribly exciting.

I think keeping your mother busy was such a beautiful idea, Diane! The angel making project really was so sweet! I am glad you parents lived into their 80’s. My Dad passed away at 69 but he had retired at 55 so we had more of him than many do. My children spent hours with him, Diane. I am happy your kids spent time with your parents, too. 🙂
