Short, Sweet and Suspenseful…

On His Watch (Search and Rescue, #0.5)On His Watch by Katie Ruggle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a debut novella by an up and coming writer and it’s short and sweet with some harrowing nail-biting thrown in.  Derek Warner and Artemis Rey used to be a couple.  When things went south with that relationship, Artie married someone else they both knew and Derek dropped out of her life. Now she’s divorced and still not totally over Derek.  And he’s never really gotten over her, either.

Derek is an Ice Rescue Diver and as part of his punishment for a pet accidentally damaging his boss’ truck, he’s assigned to do a “show and tell” rescue demonstration for the local grade school. That’s the school where Artie is teaching and her class is at the pond for the demonstration. All is going well until two of the school children go missing after another boy falls through the ice.

The young boy is pulled from the icy water and search teams are organized in the growing darkness to try to locate the two young sisters who are missing.  Of course, Artie and Derek end up teamed up together and as they search, they have some time to talk and reconnect about what happened all those years ago.  They also stumble across some evidence of an arsonist lurking in the woods that only adds to the drama.

The book debuts tomorrow, January 5, followed by the first full length Search & Rescue story expected out in April, which I’ll be dying to read.  I really like Ms. Ruggle’s style, lots of humor and a nice simmering level of heat between Artie and Derek.

I received this as an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley.  This e-book is FREE right now!!

  2. […] Today’s new release is an action-packed and suspense-filled mystery and romance that finds Lou Sparks as the newest diver in a remote Rocky Mountain town’s search and rescue operation. Lou moved across the country, far from her controlling family and an annoying ex and is planning to immerse herself in her new job. While she’s training hard and trying to fit in with the team, it seems that every time she slips up, it’s in front of her handsome but stoic boss, Callum Cook, who hardly ever smiles and certainly not at her.  We first met Lou and Callum in the introductory novella to this series, On His Watch.  You can find my review here.
